Pain drugs to carry stronger warnings: U.S. FDA

Last Updated: 2009-04-28 13:13:03 -0400 (Reuters Health)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Over-the-counter pain relievers such as Tylenol and Advil will carry new, bolder warnings about the risk of liver damage or stomach bleeding, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Tuesday.

Products containing acetaminophen will carry a prominent package warning about the risk of severe liver damage if consumers take too much of the drug or take it with too much alcohol.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDS, will carry bold warnings about the risk of stomach bleeding, the FDA said.
