US FDA, Biogen warn over multiple sclerosis drug

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Biogen Idec's multiple sclerosis
drug Avonex (interferon beta-1a) can cause severe liver injury,
including liver failure, U.S. regulatory officials and the company
warned on Wednesday.
"In some cases, these events have occurred in the presence of other
drugs that have been associated with hepatic injury," the FDA and
Biogen said in a statement posted to the agency's Web site. The company
is revising the drug's label to include the new warning, the statement
said.
