Luis A. Balart, MD,
is Chief, Section of
Gastroenterology, Department of
Medicine, at Louisiana State
University (LSU) Health Sciences
Center in New Orleans. Dr. Balart
received his medical degree from LSU
School of Medicine and completed his
residency at Naval Regional Medical
Center in Philadelphia. Postgraduate
work included a fellowship in
gastroenterology at Ochsner Medical
Institutions in New Orleans and a
fellowship in hepatology at
University of Southern California,
Rancho Los Amigos Hospital.
Dr.
Balart is on the staff of East
Jefferson General Hospital in
Metairie and Memorial Medical Center
in New Orleans. Additionally he is
the Medical Director of the Liver
Transplant Program at LSU School of
Medicine and a Senior Visiting
Physician at the Medical Center of
Louisiana, LSU Medical School.
Formerly he was a staff member at
the Center for Digestive Diseases,
Memorial Medical Center, and Medical
Director, Liver Transplantation,
Ochsner Medical Institutions.
Dr.
Balart has authored or coauthored
numerous scientific articles, book
chapters, and abstracts in the areas
of chronic hepatitis C, bile duct
diameter and aging, endoscopy in
gastrointestinal disease, and acute
and chronic pancreatitis. He is on
the editorial board of Hepatologia
Clinical (Madrid, Spain) and was
formerly an editorial board member
of the American Journal of
Gastroenterology. He is a journal
referee for Hepatology,
Gastroenterology, and Annals of
Internal Medicine, among others. Dr.
Balart has frequently presents his
works to the medical community
internationally at seminars,
workshops, congresses, scientific
meetings, and postgraduate courses.
Dr. Balart is active is several
medical societies including the
American Association for the Study
of Liver Diseases, the American
Society for Gastrointestinal
Endoscopy, and the American College
of Gastroenterology (ACG). He has
held several offices in the ACG
including President, Vice President,
Treasurer, and Chairman, and
