Willis C. Maddrey,
MD, is Professor of Internal
Medicine and Executive Vice
President for Clinical Affairs at
The University of Texas Southwestern
Medical Center at Dallas. Dr.
Maddrey received his medical degree
from The Johns Hopkins University
School of Medicine in Baltimore,
Maryland, and completed his
residency on the Osler Medical
Service of The Johns Hopkins
Hospital. He was Chief Medical
Resident in 1969. Additional
postgraduate work includes a
fellowship in liver disease with Dr.
Gerald Klatskin at Yale University
School of Medicine.
From 1970 to
1981, Dr. Maddrey directed the liver
unit at The Johns Hopkins University
School of Medicine where he was
Professor of Medicine and Associate
Physician in Chief. From 1982 to
1990, he was Magee Professor and
Chairman of the Department of
Medicine at Jefferson Medical
College.
Dr. Maddrey has authored
numerous scientific publications. He
has published extensively in the
areas of chronic viral hepatitis,
drug-induced liver disease,
alcohol-induced liver disease, liver
transplantation, and primary biliary
cirrhosis. He has authored numerous
publications focusing on hepatitis
and liver disease. He has edited or
co-edited nine books including
Transplantation of the Liver, which
is now in its 3rd edition, and
Schiff's Diseases of the Liver, the
9th edition of which was published
in November, 2002.
Dr. Maddrey is a
member of many societies including
the American Society for Clinical
Investigation and the American
Gastroenterological Association. He
was President of the American
Association for the Study of Liver
Diseases in 1981. He is a Master of
the American College of Physicians
and served as its President from
1992-1993. He is also a Fellow of
the Royal College of Physicians of
London, the Royal College of
Physicians of Glasgow, and the Royal
Australasian College of Physicians
and Surgeons.
Dr. Maddrey was
awarded the George Stuart
Outstanding Teacher Award at The
Johns Hopkins University School of
Medicine and the Christian R. and
Mary F. Lindback Award for
distinguished teaching in the
clinical sciences at Jefferson
Medical College in 1986. He received
the Distinguished Service Citation
from Wake Forest University in 1991,
and in 1998 was awarded the
Distinguished Educator Award by the
American Gastroenterological
Association and named the Adelyn and
Edmund M. Hoffman Distinguished
Chair in Medical Science. He was
awarded the Distinguished Service
Award of the American Association
for the Study of Liver Diseases in
2000. |
